Lesser Known Genocides
There are many genocides that aren't as well known as The Holocaust. Some are more well known then others and some even date back to the 1600's.
Oliver Cromwell
This genocide started with Catholic King Charles' execution followed by his heir signing of a treaty with the Irish Catholic Confederation. The Puritans, a group of English Protestants, sent out the New Model Army, commanded by Oliver Cromwell. The army was sent to make way for Protestant settlements on Ireland. When Cromwell and the New Model Army arrived in Ireland, Cromwell began killing Irishmen. In Drogheda, Cromwell and the New Model Army slaughtered nearly every soldier–around 3,000 men–for not surrendering soon enough. Cromwell killed a third of Ireland's most powerful army in just one battle. He also burned food stocks in villages all across Irelands and imprisoned any suspected Tory sympathizers. He slaughtered the armies so efficiently that his face is posted up in Ireland to provoke Catholics.
The Armenian Genocide
The Armenian Genocide, also known as the "other genocide", is the first event to be called a "Genocide." In this genocide, the Turks targeted and killed Christians. Although, Turkey still today denies that this genocide actually happened. From 1915 to 1923 the Young Turks ruled over the Ottoman Empire. They took thousands of Greek, Assyrian, and Armenian women and children without warning and separated them from their husbands, fathers and brothers. Able-bodied men were forced to work in labor camps till death, while there families marched for miles through the Syrian desert without food or drink. Turks were free to rob, rape and kill anyone in line. When they arrived at their destination, the women and children survivors that were near death were brought to extermination camps. By 1919 Ottoman officials were charged for crimes against humanity.
